The dates are about right and the location is excellent. The only problem is, first - is this really the right person and second: Who are all those other Crouches?

Part of my family that I have been wanting to find more information about is the son of Permelia Witt Crouch Hughes. His name was Joseph C Crouch although some referred to him as Cumberland. He was the step son of Israel C Hughes.

By 1905 he had moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was listed in the 1905 City Directory with sons Alexandar Crouch and Henry C Crouch. Alexander married a Mabel C and they had at least one son named Robert A Crouch born ca 1908-1909 in PA according to the 1910 census of Alleghany County PA.

I did a search of the Social Security Death Index and found a Robert Crouch who died in 1983 with a birth date and place consistent with the Robert Crouch I am searching to find. I need to get the death certificate or obituary of him to ascertain if this is the same individual and see if I can find living descendants.

From my research, I have concluded that there are at least (2) two Hughes families residing in Mason County Virginia during the early 1800’s. One line seemed to be the Israel Hughes / Mary Clark lineage and the other seems to be tied in with the Jesse David Hughes lineage. There is a lot more resources available so far on the Jesse David Hughes line than mine.

One of the goals of this website is to discern whether or not that these really are two different families or branches of one larger family. It is my hope that I can prove the latter.
